No C Wire? Your Options for Every Smart Thermostat Brand

Most smart thermostats want a C (common) wire for steady power. If your old thermostat has no wire on C, you have four options:

1. Look for a hidden spare. Pull the cable gently out of the wall. There’s often an unused wire folded back. If it’s connected to C at the furnace (or you connect it there), you’re done.
2. Use the brand’s adapter (4 wires R, W, Y, G needed):
   • ecobee Premium & Enhanced: the Power Extender Kit comes in the box.
   • Honeywell Home: the wire saver module (Y moves to K).
   • Amazon Smart Thermostat: Amazon’s C-wire power adapter (G moves to C, Y moves to K).
   • Google Nest: usually runs without C; if power issues show up, add the Nest Power Connector. Google says heat-only, cool-only and heat pump systems need a C wire or the connector.
3. Plug-in 24 V adapter. A small transformer that plugs into an outlet and runs a thin two-wire cable to the thermostat. It works for thermostats with separate Rh/Rc terminals, but leaves a visible wire.
4. Run new 18/5 thermostat cable from the furnace to the wall. This is the most reliable fix and sometimes easy when the furnace is directly below in a basement.
